The New York Foundling Hospital Family Services for Deaf Children and Adults

New York Foundling responded to unmet needs in the Deaf community by creating a specialized preventive program with education and family services for Deaf children and parents. With very few services available to this under-served population, we developed a voluntary program for families in need of support or preventive services. The program strives to prevent foster care placement by providing advocacy with individual and family counseling, career and budget planning, parenting skills training and help with housing, public assistance, and education Many families remain in our services for extended periods of time to ensure that aftercare services, which do not otherwise exist for Deaf children and adults, continue to be provided.
